During World War II, battles between retreating Germans and Slovak partisans took place on the slopes of the highest peak of the Low Tatras, Ďumbier. Today, chamois and marmots happily jump around there. This does not diminish its height of 2043.4 meters above sea level. On the north side, it appears as a huge mountain massif with cliffs up to 500 meters high, pillars, and gullies descending into glacial cirques at the ends of Bystra and Ludárová valleys. The southern slopes are covered with granite fields.
