The monastery in Lelese is the oldest monastery in Zemplín. It was built in the 12th century, fortified in the 14th century, and enhanced with moats. Later, defensive towers were added, transforming it into a fortress. The monastic complex includes a church dedicated to the Finding of the Holy Cross and a Gothic chapel of St. Michael the Archangel. In this chapel, you can admire valuable medieval frescoes. In Slovakia, there were very few so-called credible places where they had the right to issue, describe, and certify documents at the request of parties. This included the monastery in Lelese. The monastery was also home to a school for canons. After the religious order was forcibly dissolved in Czechoslovakia, the monastery was turned into a secondary agricultural school, and fertilizers were stored in the chapel.
