Church and Monastery of St.. Catherine Dechtice

At the place where Saint Catherine allegedly appeared to the young count and hermit Ján Apponyi, Count Kristóf Erdödy founded the Church and Monastery of St. Catherine in 1618. It was built in the early Baroque style by Italian master Pietro Spazzo, the builder of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Trnava. This site was also a well-known pilgrimage destination. In 1786, the monastery was abolished by decree of Emperor Joseph II. The Calvary sculpture in front of the church was moved by the Erdödy family in 1811 to Dechtice. The remaining inventory was transferred to nearby monasteries and villages.
