Spis Castle Spišské Podhradie

The castle dates back to the 11th century, with the first mention in 1249, referring to it as castrum Scypus. The castle has been rebuilt several times. The most significant reconstruction happened after the castle withstood a Tatar invasion. Later, the armies of Matúš Čák Trenčiansky damaged the castle. From 1460, the castle belonged to the Zápoľský family. Afterwards, it was managed by the Thurzovci, and later by the Csáky family, who moved to the chateau in 1710, leaving the castle abandoned. By 1780, a fire ultimately ruined the castle. Due to numerous reconstructions, the castle is among the most extensive not only in our territory but also in all of Europe. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The castle dates back to the 11th century, with the first mention in 1249, referring to it as castrum Scypus. The castle has been rebuilt several times.
