The castle originated as early as the 11th century on the site of an old fortification. This places it among the oldest castles in our territory. It had well-built fortifications, which allowed it to withstand the incursions of the Tatars. In 1302, the castle was owned by Matúš Čák Trenčiansky. During his tenure, the castle experienced its golden age. After his death, three new palaces were added to the castle, known as the Ľudovít, Barbora, and Zápoľský palaces. After the construction of the three palaces, it came into the hands of the Illesházy family, who also contributed to the work by having a wedding palace constructed. During the estate rebellions, the castle was damaged, and from 1708 it began to fall into desolation.
