The church in Podhorany was built in the 11th century during the Crusades. In 1095, the first of these expeditions was declared, and several waves of warriors from this stream went to various places in Europe. One of the waves also passed into the Trenčín area from Moravia to Slovakia, where they began to plunder and raid. They also reached the vicinity of Nitra, where there were Orthodox churches that were also popular targets for the crusaders. At this place, a disruptive stream was repelled. Shortly after that, a small Romanesque church was built in the village of Podhorany. According to research conducted here, an older structure may have stood here, possibly one of the temples that were destroyed during the crusader plundering. The church was rebuilt several times, but by the 18th century, it ceased to be used and began to decay.
