The castle was first mentioned in 1267 as castrum Arwa. The castle was built on the site of an old wooden fort. It changed owners frequently. However, it experienced its best period under the rule of the Thurzó family. In 1800, it was destroyed by fire. Afterward, it was renovated and a residential tower, citadel, palace, and chapel were added. In 1868, a museum was established here, considered one of the oldest in our territory.
