Tatra National Park Vysoké Tatry
In 1949, the oldest national park, the Tatra National Park - TANAP, was declared. Since 1993, TANAP, together with the Polish national park, has been part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The area of TANAP mainly protects mountain and alpine plants, and among the protected animals here are the Tatra eagle, brown bear, and Tatra chamois - the symbol of the Tatras. Gerlachovský štít, at 2655 m, is the highest peak in Slovakia. The symbol of Slovakia, Kriváň, is also located here. The park is notable for over 100 mountain lakes and several waterfalls. The Belianska cave is the only cave open to the public in this area. From November 1st to June 15th, for safety reasons, hiking trails in TANAP's alpine environment are closed. Outside marked hiking and educational trails, tourists may only travel with licensed mountain guides. The TANAP Museum is located in Tatranská Lomnica.Read on
