Defunct settlement Soldo Štrba

In the cadastre of the village of Štrba, near the dirt road leading to Važec, lie the remnants of the abandoned medieval settlement of Šoldov. Interestingly, there are not many historical facts about this settlement. It is believed to be older than the surrounding villages under the Tatras. The settlement consisted of rural houses, a small church, and a Benedictine monastery. During the 15th century, the 'brothers' settled here and built a fortress from which they launched raids in the surrounding area. Probably in connection with the brotherly wars, the settlement disappeared during the 15th century. The Šoldov site is a significant archaeological find with a wealth of valuable historical artifacts. For example, a skeleton was found here that was over 2 meters tall, which was an astonishing height for that time. It is possible that this led to the legend that giants once lived here. Today, this site is also significant from a tourism perspective. There are reconstructed foundations of the small church and other historical buildings. Here, you will also find a memorial, an information board, and a small seating area.
