The Andrej Kmeť Museum is located in the first building of the Slovak National Museum from 1908, designed by architect M. Milan Harminc. It serves as a regional historical and natural science research center for Turiec. The museum is named after the prominent Slovak figure in the fields of culture and natural sciences, as well as the founder of the Slovak Museum Society and the Slovak National Museum, Andrej Kmeť. Andrej Kmeť, a Catholic priest, was a notable botanist, archaeologist, ethnologist, and geologist, known mainly for having the largest herbarium in Slovakia (Herbarium Kmetianum) and for discovering a well-preserved mammoth skeleton. Kmeť donated all his collections to the museum, which currently houses over 500,000 items. Today, the building features permanent exhibitions Kmetianum, dedicated to the work of Andrej Kmeť, as well as the inanimate and living nature of Turiec. On April 1, 2004, the museum became part of the Slovak National Museum in Martin, and it currently houses the Department of Natural Science Collections of Museums in Martin. By a government decree of the Slovak Republic from August 16, 1994, the museum building was declared a National Cultural Monument.
